Last night at 9pm I noticed my computer was having some issues with loading…. I ended up reformatting my computer due to some driver issue that could not be resolved. I had found a new “slim” version of Catalyst control center. It was supposed to be good at making my games run smoother… When in fact, it made them worse and my computer die. I couldn’t even get past a multi-colored screen that resembled an ugly sweater that had been vomited on by Rainbow Bright. I did re-format. I had all my file saved in the “my documents” which was part of the re-formatting process. The backups in my D:/ open in some weird wing-dings code because I need to get Microsoft word, or open office. However, I don’t have time to download and install these programs because I need to go to class. So here is my very brief explaination of technology in the future:

Lights: Normal florescent and incandescent are replaced by HID (High intensity discharge) lighting and Metal Halide lights, due their cost effectiveness; energy efficency; and luminosity.

Television: Televisions are no longer analog, and are using a High Definition format or digital satellite. Television is now On-demand; meaning when a show is available it can be watched whenever.

Telephone: Most telecommunications companies make a shift toward cellular and satellite run home phones. Meaning home phones are non-essential, or work just like a cell-phone. No need for telephone wiring or long distance charges. Telecommunication cables are removed in most areas and recycled, due to the increase in wireless internet access and satellite and cellular phones region.

Power: Most power sources are now run by Hydrogen Peroxide. 90% of all vehicles are run by hydrogen/electricity/menthol/hydrogen.

The climate: The climate will have a dramatic shift, almost a seasonal revolution. The average winter span will increase and shorten the spring. Making evolutionary changes in the life cycles of plants and other hibernating/migrating animals.

Economy: The American economy is over inflated and the value of a dollar is reduced by 20%. Most candy bars cost $3.00.

Cooling and heating: This industry suffers sufficient research, however the costs of cooling and heating are reduced and is more accessible to households.

Drugs and medicine: Most drugs and prescriptions are obsolete. The most anyone has to do for a sickness is visit a store or medical facility for nanoparticle treatment and some surgery done using nano-sewing kit that mends severed nerves to a genetic switch that turns off fat genes. Nano-enhancements are used in activities like sports and in the military.

Internet: The wireless region spreads across 80% of America’s coasts and is accessible from major towns and cities. There are similar net regulations as we have today, but with advanced changes to copyright and restrictions. The internet has practically become an internet database of user created content and applications. Many applications can be transferred onto a hand-held personal device such as a palm pilot or cell-phone. Many applications allow users to input information that is constantly up-to-date such as accident reporting and speed trap locations.

Identity: Many companies offer nano-surgery to place small devices into the human skin to allow quick and easy control of one’s private date such as birth certificate, social security numbers, and other essential documents. Many users of this technology find ways to customize this nano-surgery to have it placed in various parts such as fingertips for easy credit card scanning at stores. Also in ears for hand-free use of nano-phones.

Have you noticed that at the end of the semester there seems to be much to do? I noticed today and I almost had a panic attack. It feels like everything is important, even laundry seems to stress me out. I cannot emphasize how overwhelmed I was until I wrote a “To Do” list. It helps, it really does. I hope that everyone is staying on task with their work and I wish everyone best of luck with their grades.

I hope these are right!

I think that the idea of becoming a big time movie star has all but been drowned out by the crap out there that people happen to become famous with! There are thousands of ways of becoming a big-shot: Web comics, video diaries, home movies, games, or almost anything else that comes in a video/artwork/audio format. I understand people becoming “known” or “familiar” on the internet, but then someone makes a million dollars off a web comic and it just goes downhill from there.

The internet is like space. There are planets (msn.com, gamespy.com, etc), stars (Microsoft.com, Ebay), and things (weather.com, filehippo.com). Then after years and years of progression, space shuttles spewing gratituous ammounts of bullshit and putrid radioactive waste out all orafices in all directions onto “said” planets and stars in the form of lolcats (a.k.a youtube, explosm.com, etc.) explode out of no-where to let us know that mankind like to watch that video of a monkey sniffing it’s finger after being up its butt. I mean, yeah youtube is all good and dandy for sharing information (much like a space ship is useful for flying in space) however when you dump 400 gallons of shit into the fuel tank and exhaust horrible clouds of “who-knows-what” things start malfunctioning and progress comes to a standstill.

The readings were nice, short, simple, and educational. However you want to look at it, it’s about social networking and sharing information. The trick, is to put the “right” information out there. I don’t need “Trash cat is unpleased!” or “I can has Chezbrgr!” e-mailed to me in the bulk nonstop for the rest of the existence of my e-mail accounts.

Well….. First of all, the article on WoW had some in depth information. However, it poses many questions that I am not too interested in seeking answers for. For example, The social structure of WoW and Second Life are unique… but when I fly around Second Life I have a 70% to run into some porn, gambling, online sex, and whatnot. I believe the internet, in it’s unregulated form, is a spawning ground for unethical interaction. For example, I can easily bitch at someone on WoW and then ignore them and be happy, this is unacceptable for my research in a virtual world. Not to mention, with an avatar representing you there is almost no way to prove what someone says is the truth. I just don’t know what to think of things like SL and WoW because they are so socially awkward that it is almost unappealing to study it.

My other stance, would be that social interaction on WoW and SL is unique in the way that it is how people would behave if they had choice of their looks, personality, truth, and so on. My avatar on SL is a big green blob monster, i have some friends and people tend to be very accepting of me. However, I don’t act the way I do in real life as I do in SL and WoW because there is no reason for me to be ethical or truthful. I am just ranting, but this is how I kinda feel.

Other online communities such as Facebook, Youtube, and the such prove a more acceptable place to study social behavior. In these communities you find actual people posting movies, music, and other bits of information to enforce and represent themselves. Instead of a made up avatar to represent, people create things to represent themselves. For example, some people post online journals on YouTube, many people blog in their facebook and myspace. There are many people out there communicating in ways that were incomprehensible in the past. I have spoken to so many Korean people on SL and so many austrailian people on Wow that I can say that I am comfortable chatting with people of other nations and be truthful to them.

So my stance generally is:

Secondlife: Unethical, untruthful, and can be useful for interaction with people you ACTUALLY know.

WoW: Unethical, competitive, and is great with friends

YouTube, Facebook: Useful and informative, and funny

MySpace: Eww….

I, being a stumble addict, happened across some handy bit of information on “How has Information Changed?” written by, I think, David Warlick.

He begins the post with a question, which is also the title, and then continues to define and create reason based on principles and experience with the digital world. This discussion is further enhanced with the comments added at the bottom. I also enjoy his writing style, it was smooth and easy. I did however dislike the fact that it was rather short.

Take a look at it and come back to me about your opinions. I agree with this information and I would like to see if someone can come up with an opposing opinion or possibly shed a little more light on the miracles of the digital culture.
